Bealtaine Festival 2010 in Clonmel Library  got off to a great start with The Pre-Madonnas. Mezzo soprano Liz Ryan and soprano Mary Flaherty presented a delectable selection of arias and duets with lots of very funny comedy sketches and ably assisted on piano by David.

The secret life of bees is not based on the life of bees but uses them to demonstrate some of life’s finer points to a young fourteen year old Girl ” Lily” who has lost her Mother and has run away with the BLACK servant “Rosaleen” of a rich peach farmer living in South Carolina in the 1950’s.
She has run away because of her fathers abusive nature and his lack of understanding of the female species. The Elegance of the Hedgehog‘The ‘Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbary

Reviews were decidedly mixed for this book in our Nenagh library book club but certainly this reviewer would encourage the reader to persevere with it.

‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barabary suggests a satirical look at French soiety through the eyes and words of 54 year old Renée Michel, a concierge working in a  upscale Parisian apartment building, and Paloma, a 12 year old student. Renée is judged to be an uneducated, dull caretaker by the residents of the building but in fact she is a deeply intellectual and philosophical woman, well read and cultured. She  lives with a tragic secret from her youth which she finally reveals to Paloma, thereby changing Paloma’s disillusioned view of the society and family in which she lives.
