The Civil War
Events in the county during the summer of 1922 allow a range of research topics.
With few exceptions, Bureau of Military History witnesses did not mention the civil war, other than in some cases to note that they did not take part.
Listed below are witnesses who provided some information about the Truce and/or Civil War
Michael Fitzpatrick (W.S. 1433)
Sean Fitzpatrick (W.S. 1259)
“At the outbreak of the Civil War, the 3rd Tipperary Brigade numbered
approximately 3,000 men, of whom nearly half were on whole-time duty.”
Dan Breen (W.S. 1763)
John Sharkey (W.S. 1100)
James Kilmartin (W.S. 881)
For a comprehensive account see Fr Colmcille, The Third Tipperary Brigade, 1921-23 in Tipperary Historical Journal (1990-92). Also Aodogán O’Rahilly, The Civil War- a teenager’s recollections 70 years on in THJ (1992) – describes events around Clonmel and Jack Duff, A Free State soldier’s memories of the Civil War in THJ (1993) – he was with the Free State forces when they entered Clonmel in early August 1922. Sean Fitzpatrick covered the civil war from a republican point of view in his Recollections of the Fight for Freedom (Tipperary, n.d.)
