Tipperary Libraries have launched new assistive reading technologies which are now available free of charge in libraries around the County. ReadABLE was officially launched in Thurles, Nenagh and Clonmel libraries by Cllr Marie Murphy, Chairperson of County Tipperary Joint Libraries Committee and Cllr John McGrath, Vice-Chairperson.
This software will make reading more accessible for everyone. The software is designed to help people with reading, learning or sight difficulties to enjoy books and reading and it will also make access to the Internet and the PC much easier. The same resources can also be used to help with foreign language learning, personal study and research.
The range of software available includes: JAWS screen reader, MAGIC screen magnifier, Kurzweill 1000 and Kurzweil 3000, which is particularly helpful for people with dyslexia. We are proud to introduce a new package to this list – Read & Write Gold. This is a literacy support tool designed to aid users of all ages who require extra assistance when reading or composing text. Online tutorials are available at your library.
A range of assistive reading software has been installed in Borrisokane, Cahir, Clonmel, Cashel, Templemore, Nenagh, Roscrea, Tipperary Town, Thurles and Carrick on Suir libraries, to help members with reading, learning and sight difficulties to enjoy books, text and the PC/internet. The same resources can also be used to help with Foreign Language Learning, Study and Research and Struggling Readers. Read&Write 9 GOLD is a literacy support tool designed to assist Users of all ages who require extra assistance when reading or composing text. The software provides continuity by supporting users throughout education from primary through to tertiary level and into the workplace.Online tutorials available at your library.

I am blind but need to use Word and the Internet, what does my library offer?
For blind people with a good knowledge of a PC and Keyboard, Freedom Scientific JAWS (Job Access With Speech) for Windows 5.0: Jaws for Windows (JAWS) 5.0, is a screen reader of great benefit to a blind person who wishes to access many windows applications. The latest version includes Internet Explorer 5.0 and 6.0 on the CD-Rom. Because this product can take some time to master, Tipperary Libraries recommends that if you want to use this software at one of our libraries that you have either used it before or bring along someone who has until you are comfortable with it.
I am blind but love books, is there software that that can help me with my love of reading? For people who are visually impaired or blind, Kurzweil 1000 can help access virtually any printed or electronic publication by making text audible. It has the ability to convert average size text to Large Print and to read this text aloud to the user. If the user wishes, this product provides tools for searching, indexing, outlining, annotating, embossing and creating documents or audio files (e.g. MP3) for e-mail, fax or printing. Kurzweil 1000 also enables online access to books, magazines, encyclopaedias and educational tools that promote more active reading by users. Tipperary Libraries recommends that if you want to use this software at one of our libraries that you have either used it before or bring along someone who has until you are comfortable with it as staff cannot always be available to assist you.

I find it difficult reading the text on a PC screen and find the pointer/ cursor impossible to locate?
ZoomText Magnifier, Version 8.1 can simply help people who find the text on an average computer screen too small or who find it difficult to find the cursor or pointer on screen, by enlarge all or part of the screen and highlighting the pointer and cursor.

Other Books and Resources
Tipperary Libraries' branches and Schools department ( Thurles) have a wide range of books and reading series that can assist children, teenagers and adults to enjoy reading and learning.
For Adults, Barrington Stoke and Livewires will be of great interest to people with dyslexia or who require a book relevant to their age but with vocabulary that reflects their reading age as well. These books can help narrow the gap between Interest Age and Read Age.
