The next meeting of the Carrick on Suir Library afternoon bookclub takes place on Tuesday 8th April at 2.30pm. The group are currently reading Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson.
This novel which is set in Edgecombe St. Mary in the English countryside charts the course of true love for a one Major Ernest Pettigrew, retired, who becomes intrigued by the local Pakistani shopkeeper, after his brother’s death. Mrs. Jasmina Ali and the Major share a love of love of literature and the loss of their spouses.
Written with sharp perception and a delightfully dry sense of humour, Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand is a heart warming love story with a cast of unforgettable characters that questions how much one should sacrifice personal happiness for the obligations of family and tradition.
The book club next meeting is on Tuesday 8th April 2014 at 2.30pm and new members are welcome. 051 640591 for enquiries.
