Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) Reading Challenge in Carrick-on-Suir Library

This February the Library decided to launch a new reading challenge for the children of Carrick-on-Suir and the surrounding areas. Inspired by the D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) campaign, organised by HarperCollins Children’s Books, we challenged the local children to read 10 or more library books each during February and March.

Over 700 flyers were delivered to all the local schools and this drew a huge response to the D.E.A.R. challenge. During these months 300 children joined the library or renewed their membership and, along with existing members, they checked out over 5000 juvenile books.

Such was the success of the event that we had to hold two parties to cater for all the children who wanted to attend the end of challenge get-together. The parties were held in the library on Friday the 10th April. Oliver Corbett of Reco’s Magic Show provided the entertainment and what a show it was. The children were enthralled by his feats of magic and balloon modelling skills. Afterwards all the children received a personalised Certificate of Achievement and a goody bag. Some lucky participants also won spot prizes on the day.

Congratulations to all who took part in the challenge and their huge achievement in reading over 5,000 books.
