This fast paced and well researched novel will satisfy both fans of historical fiction and thriller alike. As the name suggests the story centres around the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79 and the subsequent destruction of the town of Pompeii. The main protagonist, Attilius, is sent from Rome to manage the area’s aqueduct and soon discovers that something sinister is in the offing. Harris adroitly recreates the ancient world in an uncomplicated way that the modern reader can easily appreciate. The rather straight forward approach that is taken to character development helps the momentum of the plot which quickly builds to a crescendo when Vesuvius blows its top. If you like writers like Simon Scarrow, Conn Igguldson and Bernard Cornwell why not give Pompeii a bash?
