Computerising Our Libraries

Computerising Our Libraries

Tipperary Libraries embarked on automating the library service across County Tipperary in 2001, with substantial financial help from the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government and the Information Society Commission. The aim of this project was to implement a system that would provide a cost effective, economical and efficient service to the community by the wholesale integration of information technology into the library and information service.

The overall objectives of installing an integrated computer system are :

* To provide and promote a more accessible and enhanced library and information service.
* To enable the library service to be delivered at the same level to all service points.
* To provide a highly efficient utilisation of the resources held throughout the library service.
* To be based on an easily understood and operable technology.
* To allow the library service to participate in and take full advantage of current and future developments in information provision.
* To provide management and financial information for the effective monitoring of performance of the service.
* To enable a more effective use of staff time with a resultant enhancement of the service to the community.
* To promote job satisfaction and employee motivation in the library service.

Tipperary Libraries employ the Horizon Library Management System, used by the majority of Irish public libraries, which is managed in Ireland by Interleaf Technology. We use Version 7.3 of the system and nine branches are now live: Cashel, Carrick-On-Suir, Clonmel, Nenagh, Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles, Tipperary, Cahir and Killenaule. Remote sites are live to HQ over a network of leased lines [Clonmel, Nenagh, Cashel] and, introduced in 2005, a VPN network over broadband [Roscrea, Templemore, Tipperary, Cahir, Carrick, Killenaule], which was designed by the Local Government Computer Services Board and is now maintained by 4Front IT Solutions.

The system has also radically changed our book/media intake and processing. We employ the Bookstream system, developed by Interleaf Technology, which streamlines the invoicing procedure, combining catalogue records to incoming invoices, adding far greater efficiency to our procedures and delivering books/media more rapidly to our users. We also employ Interleaf's BookZ system, allowing us to download catalogue records direct to the Horizon system when cataloguing other/retrospective material.
