Cashel 12th to 15th November 2012
If you like Time Team, if you think archaeology is very interesting or you just want to dig deeper into Cashels past, this is your chance.
The bootcamp is aimed at adults who want to learn more about archaeology. Designed to be very “hands on” and to teach the participants real archaeological skills including scaled technical drawing, optical survey, burial excavation and forensic archaeology techniques, scientific analysis of environmental samples, how to use documentary sources and resources and finds identification. Designed to be fun, informal, practical and FREE this is your chance to unleash your inner Lara Croft or Indiana Jones. The Adopt a Monument Archaeology Bootcamp is funded under the South Tipperary Heritage Plan by the Heritage Council and South Tipperary County Council and run by a professional archaeologist.

Module 1: 12/11/12 (9.30 am – 1.15 pm)
FIELDWORK: Short walking tour of the medieval town. Practical workshops on scale drawing, survey and
photographic workshops of the town wall and medieval architecture in Cashel. How to compose
and take high quality archaeology images, how to use optical survey equipment and how to
produce technical scale drawings and field notes. All equipment and material provided.
Meet at Cashel Library.
Module 2: 13/11/12 (9.30am – 1.15 pm)
MODERN ARCHAEOLOGY: Presentation on modern archaeological practice. Includes slideshow on major discoveries
from recent excavations in Tipperary and Cashel. What we know about medieval Cashel and how
we know it. Finds identification module. Get your hands on flint tools, medieval pottery, medieval
brooches etc. How we dig. Why we dig. Cashel Library.
Module 3: 14/11/12 (9.30 am – 1.15 pm)
EXCAVATION: Introduction to forensic analysis of human remains. Includes practical on excavation
and recording of an adult inhumation burial. How to dig, record and interpret human remains
using cutting edge modern scientific techniques. This is the same training given to new
archaeologists in the field. Think CSI meets Time Team. Cashel Heritage Centre
Module 4: 15/11/12
(9.30 am – 1.15 pm)
RESEARCH/ LAB: Workshops on documents & research; sources and resources. How to research an archaeological
project. What documents, maps & online resources are available and how to use them.
Introduction to forensic analysis of environmental samples; seeds, charcoal, beetles and more.
What they look like and what they can tell us about the past. Cashel Library
