Cashel Book Club

Who can join?

Anyone can join, as long as you are a current member of Tipperary Libraries. At the moment the group is comprised of 12 members. Staff members, Catherine and Suzanne, organise the meetings and books for the group.

How does the Book Circle work?

So far they've introduced a good mixture of fiction and non-fiction which people appreciate. Crime fiction was reviewed recently, which was very successful. Most people liked it and were enthusiastic about the books chosen, although it didn't appeal to everyone.

We try to encourage members to suggest books and authors themselves once we tell them what an upcoming topic will be. At the last meeting they discussed biographies by people suchs as Hilary Clinton, Gerry Adams, Nuala O'Faolain, Maire Cruise O'Brien and Nell McCafferty. We also plan to review works of historical fiction in the future.

One of the items planned for the future is a radio broadcast of one of our meetings, possibly in September

How often does the group meet?

The group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings last about 50 minutes.

Clonmel Book Circle

Who Can Join?

Anyone can join, if you are not currently a member we can join you up when you come to book club. At the moment we have four adult book clubs, the morning Adult Book Circle and three Evening Reading Groups. We are hoping to start a fourth evening group and are currently taking names and contact details. Staff member, Stephanie organises the meetings and books for the groups. More male members would be very welcome. It is often very interesting to have a male and female opinion and see the differences!

How Does the Book Circle Work?

The morning Adult Book Circle meets on the second Monday of every month. The group was started by Marie and Lorraine more than five years ago. They have had the pleasure of being on Marian Finucane’s Radio Show and regularly send reviews to magazines and more notably Ryan Tubridys Barry’s Tea Book Club.

The Evening Reading Groups are only fledgling book clubs compared to the well established morning club. Two groups, the Ten To Seven Club and the Ucta Club meet on the first Wednesday of each month. The Third Club and hopefully the fourth will meet on the second Wednesday of every month. So far the Evening Reading Groups have enjoyed full attendance, a cuppa and lively discussion on the books they’ve read. They are all avid readers and have showed great enthusiasm for book related events etc.

All the book clubs read the same books which have been organised on a rotation system.  At each meeting the group begins by discussing the books they have read since the last meeting, including books chosen outside of the club. Members like to recommend authors/titles to each other and they frequently take note of what other members are reading.

The group is very informal and everyone's voice is heard. The group decided that it was not necessary to have read the book which was taken at the previous meeting in order to attend the next meeting. Also if a member doesn't like the book, the group value hearing their opinion.

Templemore Book Club

Who can join?

Anyone can join, as long as you are a current member of Tipperary Libraries. At the moment the group is comprised of 15 members. Staff member, Anne, organises the meetings and books for the group.

How does the Book Club work?

The club was established in October 2005, and as this coincided with the Irish Independent launch of their weekly book offer, the first title chosen by the club was 'That they may face the rising sun' by John McGahern.
Ann is anxious to encourage members to suggest books and authors themselves thus encouraging members to openly express their opinions, likes and dislikes.
Titles or themes are suggested and the merits of each are discussed. When a book is chosen copies will be sourced by Anne and made available for members in the library.

How often does the group meet?

The group meets on the last Thursday of every month from 6:45 pm – 7:45 pm. Contact, Anne or any member of staff at Templemore library for details.

Tipperary Book Club

Who can join?

The Book Club is open to all adults. For a more enjoyable evening it is recommended that anyone coming along to the book club have read the book of choice for that night beforehand.

How does the Book Circle work?

The first meeting of the group was held in October 2005. A number of books were selected for reading for the following months. The books are selected by general agreement of those present. Lively discussion, strong contested views and laughter are the norm at the meetings, which are concluded with a sociable cup of tea and biscuit. Upcoming titles for discussion are The Pope's Children by David McWilliams, Full Tilt by Derval Murphy, On Beauty by Zadie Smith, Shooting History by John Snow, Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon. The meetings are facilitated by Patricia Kelly of South Tipperary VEC and are co-ordinated by Nollaig Butler, Tipperary Library staff, and Marie Collison.

How often does the group meet?

The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month, in the Excel Centre, from 8 pm - 10 pm. There is a small fee of €3 on the night. Enquiries can be made to Tipperary Library on 062-51761.

Thurles Book Club

Who can join?

We are a new group, which first met in November 2006. Our numbers are increasing with each meeting; currently we have 17 members (all female). Any men who would like to join would be warmly welcomed, as a mixed membership often leads to a more varied response to the books.

How does the book club work?

We have read a variety of books in the short time we have been meeting, ranging from fiction,non-fiction and poetry. The group decided that Library staff member Lorraine would choose titles for the moment. Our meetings are very informal (we start every meeting with a cup of tea & a biscuit) and the group decided that it was not necessary to have read the previous months book to attend the next meeting. Everyone’s opinion is valued and we encourage every voice to be heard. It’s often the case that a title that was not liked will give rise to the best type of discussion. Members like to recommend titles read outside the book club to the others and this leads to greater exposure to new authors, genres etc.

How often does the book club meet?

Thurles Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Contact Lorraine at Thurles Library for details.
