Invitation to Participate in a Research Study Entitled
A Phenomenological Study of Generational Memory in Anglo-Irish Conflict
Greetings,
I am a PhD Candidate at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the field of Conflict Analysis and Resolution.
I am undertaking research leading to the production of a dissertation or on the subject of generational memory and the Irish emotional experiences toward the British. This study is being conducted in order to gain an understanding of the influence of generational memory, passed down in families, on Irish thoughts and feelings toward the British. Through the use of interviews I will study the phenomenon of generational memory as it relates to emotions directed toward events in Irish history, British people in history, and in modern day in order to understand the mechanisms and modes for generational hate and anger. I have chosen to work with adults in Tipperary County because of my own experiences with generational memory and hatred of the British via my grandmother, whose family emigrated from Tipperary County in the 1850’s. Up to 15 adult residents will be participating in this study.
I would be grateful if you would volunteer to assist in this project, by consenting to participate in an interview, which covers certain aspects of this topic. No more than 60 minutes on any interview occasion would be required. This research project will include audio recording of interview sessions. No names will be used at any time during the project duration. These recordings will be available to be heard by the researcher, the Institutional Review Board of Nova Southeastern University, and the following Dr. Jason Campbell (Dissertation Chair), Dr. Toran Hansen and Dr. Cheryl Duckworth (Dissertation committee members). I will be transcribing the interviews on a personal laptop after each interview session. The recording will be kept securely in a locked safe in my personal office. The recording will be kept for 36 months (as required by Nova Southeastern University’s Institutional Review Board) and destroyed after that time by being permanently removed from the hard drive of the laptop. Any printed, transcriptions will be burned or shredded.
Because your voice will be potentially identifiable by anyone who hears the recording, your confidentiality for things you say (or do) on the recording cannot be guaranteed although I will limit access to the tape as described in this paragraph.
Be assured that any information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence and none of the participants will be individually identifiable in the resulting thesis, report or other publications. You are, of course, free to discontinue participation at any time or to decline to answer particular questions.
I sincerely hope you will consider participating in this study. Any enquiries you may have concerning this project should be directed to me at the address given above or by telephone 1-801-425-2722 or by email (sh1214@nova.edu). Email is the best way to contact me while in Ireland. Interviews can be scheduled through May 29, 2014,
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Hanisko
