Children's Summer Book Bus
Scéim Samhraidh um Léitheoireacht
In an effort to outreach our library services to communities living far away from a library building, we are using our Schools Mobile Van which is not normally in use during the summer months to duplicate as a Children’s Summer Book Bus. The Book Bus is bringing a wide variety of quality books to children in parts of Tipperary that do not have a library nearby. The Book Bus is for Children aged up to 14 and is completely FREE. Children can borrow 4 books per visit and can join the Summer Reading Tree.
The Summer Reading Tree is a very successful reading programme that encourages children to read during the summer months, thus making their transition back to school in September easier. However, despite the success of this programme, its success is mainly limited to children living in close proximity to a library building.
The Children’s Summer Book Bus started on the 29th June and with continue until the 19th August. The Bus visits 5 locations across the county including
Tuesdays :Clogheen ( 10.30 – 12.30 ) & Mullinahone ( 2.30 – 4.30 )
Wednesdays : Newport ( 10.30 – 1.00 – 2.00 – 4.30 )
Thursdays: Templetuohy ( 10.30 -12.30 ) & Littleton ( 2.00 – 4.00)
"As a parent I would like to endorse the Reading tree as a great summer activity. All four of my children have participated at one time or another. For a very young preschool - junior infant child, I found it a good way to get the child interested in picture books and simple word books. They love to see their name on a leaf hanging on the tree. For the older primary school child reading is a wonderful alternative to TV, computer games and playstation during rainy summer days. An added bonus is that I found my kids continued to read throughout the year. After participating in the Reading Tree, one of my children jumped two reading levels when school resumed last September" Clonmel Library Borrower - Karen Coyle
The Service was promoted in the schools before the summer holidays and the reaction of parents and children has been great with borrower figures increasing every week, over 300 children are using the service and in the first 3 weeks over 2200 books have been borrowed.
