Talk, Read, Write........... Family Reading 2009

Scéim Samhraidh um Léitheoireacht

  • At home, create a ‘Reading Space’ that is cosy and comfortable with enough light. Turn off distractions like the T.V. or radio and cuddle up!
  • Have a range of books for all ages, interests and topics. It is easy to keep a varied selection of books available at home if you are a member of your local library.
  • Don’t expect total silence, especially when participation is essential and fun. However, only start when you have their full attention.  You can do this by explaining what is going to happen and how you are going to need their help with finding things on the page.
  • You might want to start by telling them a little about the story and the characters.  That creates more anticipation and can help small children relate better to the story.
  • Interaction is key. It is important to ask children what they think of the cover? what they think it might be about? What can they see on the cover, what animal it is etc.?
  • Try to bring the characters alive by picking accents and voice levels for each one.
  • Get a child to tell a story or sing a song. It gives them confidence to talk aloud and can be great fun.
  • Children who have started to read like to be able to read some of the words, i.e. you will say “what did the little duck say to his Mom”, then I put your finger underneath the word and the child says it aloud.
  • Select the appropriate age level book. If too hard or too easy the child will lose interest and confidence.
  • Mix books about counting, shapes, colours and alphabet along side storybooks.
  • Read what’s in the book, not what you want it to be or rush it to get to the end. The child will pick up on your lack of interest! It is better if you like the story yourself.
  • It doesn’t matter how long storytime lasts, concentration levels vary and grows with age.
  • Pre readers love familiarity, hence the re-reading of the same book. This gives you a chance to ask your child: about the pictures, what they remember happens next, to finish sentences, find hidden characters etc.
  • Always give a child a chance to handle the books themselves. Leave their storybooks in their playroom, in the living room, in their bedroom.
  • Smile, laugh and cuddle and have lots of fun!!!!!
