In 15 short tales (some all in pictures), author-illustrator Shaun Tan depicts life in the enigmatic Outer Suburbia: the visit of a foreign exchange student, the rage of an irritable neighbour who breaks toys that stray into her garden, the domestication of ballistic missiles… Tan’s tone is often slightly distant, creating a sense of the past, of a world familiar yet unfamiliar; sometimes lightly nostalgic, sometimes verging on the menacing, but always melding word and picture to make a glorious, imaginative experience for his readers.
