Clonmel: Kickham Barracks

Cluain Meala: Dún Kickham

CLONMEL - 18th Royal Irish DepotClonmel had been a garrison town for British troops since its surrender to Cromwell in 1650, but a permanent military barracks was not built in the town until 1780. The reason behind its construction was what seemed to be a threat of rebellion from the growing Irish Volunteer movement. In 1805 the garrison was extended with the erection of an artillery barracks, built in anticipation of an invasion by Napoleon and the 1870s saw an enlargement of the existing quarters.

World War I & the War of Independence

Victoria Barracks, named in honour of the Queen's coronation in became the regimental depot for the Royal Irish Regiment in 1882. It was at the Barracks that soldiers from the southeast were trained prior to World War I, and the town of Clonmel lost 50 of its natives from the headquarters during the struggle. During the War of Independence Clonmel was garrisoned by the Devonshire Regiment and from mid-1921, the York& Lancaster Regiment. In February 1922 the Barracks was taken over by Commandant Dalton, commander of 5th Battalion of the 3rd Tipperary Brigade of the IRA.

CLUAIN MEALA – Armlann an 18ú reisimint ÉireannachBhí Cluain Meala mar bhaile garastúin do thrúpaí Sasanacha ón uair a ghéill sé do Chromail i 1650, ach níor tógadh dún buan míleata sa bhaile roimh 1780. Tógadh an dún toisc bagairt na réabhlóide a tháinig ó ghluaiseacht Óglaigh na hÉireann, a bhí ag fás ag an am. Sa bhliain 1805 síneadh amach an dún le dún airtléire, a tógadh ar eagla go ngabhfadh Napoleon Éire agus síneadh amach na ceantair ar fad sna 1870daí.

An Chéad Chogadh Domhanda & Cogadh na Saoirse

Bhí Dún Victoria, ainmnithe in ómos do chorónú na Banríona, mar armlann don Reisimint Éireannach Ríoga ón bhliain 1882. Traenáladh saighdiúirí ón oirdheisceart ansin roimh Cogadh Domhanda a hAon, agus chaill Cluain Meala 50 dá dhúchasaigh sa chomharc. Le linn Chogadh na Saoirse, sheas Reisimint Devonshire garastún i gCluain Meala agus ó lár 1921, bhí reisimint Yorkshire & Lancashire ann. I mí Feabhra na bliana 1922 ghlac an Ceannfort Dalton, ceannasaí an 5ú cathlán den 3ú Briogáid Thiobraid Árann den IRA seilbh an dúin.
