The Hereford World Map: Mappa Mundi (Reproduction by The Folio Society, 2010, Limited Edition)

The original which is housed in Hereford Cathedral is the largest medieval world map in mappamundiexistence. The ‘Mappa Mundi’ dates from around 1300, made by gifted craftsmen and artists and taking over a year to complete. It is recognised by UNESCO as an exceptionally important cultural artefact. It shows how medieval people saw the physical world around them; perhaps more importantly, it also reveals how they perceived it culturally and spiritually.

King Henry’s Map of the British Isles. (Reproduction by The Folio Society)

King Henry VIII Map of British IslesThe original ‘Angliae Figura’ was a New Year’s Gift to King Henry VIII by Archdeacon of Rochester in 1537.  Hanging in Hampton Court Palace, its accuracy and detail would have made it invaluable to Henry in implementing his policies, both foreign and domestic.
