November 8th was European Day of Healthy Eating and Cooking for Children, and Europe Direct Information Centre at Thurles Library held a fun event to highlight this topic. On Monday 16th November, in conjunction with Euro-toques Ireland, local chef Brendan Sheridan held two workshops for primary school children on healthy eating. The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate the concepts of taste, origin and seasonality of food and make children aware of the health aspects of food. Also to raise awareness on where food comes from, how it is produced, preparation and cooking and most importantly enjoyment of food!Almost 70 boys and girls from Gaelscoil Bhríde and the Ursuline Primary attended on the day. Under Brendan’s expert encouragement and guidance, they got the chance to taste such food as salami, frog’s legs, crab meat and lots of different smoothies. Brendan, and his assistant Debbie, went to great lengths to put on a gastronomic show for the children and teachers, and it was very much appreciated.
