To celebrate the launch of the Tipperary Bealtaine Festival 2014, North & South Tipperary County Council’s Arts Services and Tipperary Libraries are hosting a launch event in the Gallery Space of The Source Arts Centre, Thurles on Thursday 1st May at 2.30pm. This year’s festivities will be launched by Garda Chris Verling, Chairperson of Successful Ageing Thurles.

The launch will be followed by a screening of award winning film, Irish Folk Furniture by Tipperary native Tony Donoghue. This is an animated documentary about repair and recycling in rural Ireland. In rural Ireland, old handpainted furniture is often associated with hard times, with poverty and with a time many would rather forget. Because of this association much of the country’s furniture heritage lies abandoned in barns and sheds. In the making of this film 16 pieces of abandoned folk furniture were restored and returned back into daily use.

Local musicians Tom Williams, Martin Horgan & Lily Hackett will also perform at the opening event, taking us on a musical journey through the Showbands Era.
