On Saturday 16 February Thurles Library was proud to host the first ever presentation ceremony of The Tipperary Young Readers Awards. This initiative is part of our Right to Read campaign and involved 6th Class pupils from schools around the county taking part in a reading challenge that promotes not only reading but also critical assessment of the books themselves. The Awards were very well attended and we would like to express our deep appreciation to Ann Marie Mullins and Ellen Kilmartin for the great succes they have made of the inaugural TYRAs.

To celebrate the occasion we had a number of entertaining events throughout the day:

The Childrens’ Books Ireland Book Clinic was on hand to prescribe doses of new books for our eager readers, while Anyone4Science helped the kids, and a few adults too, to make necklaces and key-rings by using beads and binary code. Rosie from Animal Magic was also on hand to display some mesmerising animals of every shape and size, ranging from irresistibly cute and furry chinchillas to a brightly coloured and exotic looking snake. The afternoon was rounded off in energetic style when Hannah taught some nifty Zumba moves to the kids.

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped to make the very first TYRAs awards day such a success in Thurles Library!
