October is Children’s Book Festival Month, an annual celebration that encourages children to discover the joy of reading for pleasure and fosters a lifelong love of books. This year, local schoolchildren enjoyed engaging and inspiring sessions with authors Jen Wallace, Anthony Galvin, and Caroline Buscher.
Jen Wallace introduced pupils from St. Peter and Paul’s School and Sisters of Charity School to her popular Dinosaur Pie series. She engaged the children in discussions about dinosaurs, both real and imagined, encouraging curiosity and imaginative thinking. The session concluded with the children designing their own “Dino Keep Out” signs.
Anthony Galvin brought history to life for the pupils of Sisters of Charity School and St Mary’s CBS. He spoke about the First World War, vividly describing the realities of life in the trenches. He also shared the remarkable story of a nurse who spent 4 years on the front line. She was one of only ten Irish women to be awarded this honour by the King of England following the war.
Caroline Buscher gave pupils from Sisters of Charity School, St. Oliver’s School and Presentation School an insight into the writing process, exploring where authors find inspiration and how ideas develop into stories. She then guided the children in creating their own pieces of writing, with several pupils sharing their work with the group.
Clonmel Library was delighted to host these events. We would like to acknowledge the support we received from Tipperary Creative Ireland Fund and Tipperary Arts Office.
